Another wet day at the Coupe Icare Festival

Saturday, September 18th

Big lie in this morning...and why not with the skies continuing to pour down with rain. Gans was leaving to head back to Spain with Alex to do some more paragliding and skydiving. Unfortunately he and Phil both had their paragliders stolen last night...how lame. Thieves suck. We later found out that some other British guys also had some gear stolen, and the thieves were quite brazen on this one...they actually came into the tent while the guy was sleeping, took money from his wallet and also grabbed his keys, unlocked his trailer or van and stole his paramotor! Yikes.

I ventured over to the cinema tent in the afternoon and they were playing some movies from previous festivals. I found most of the movies better than the other night’s line up. I really enjoyed one called “The Birdman of the Himalayas” which was about a guy, John Silvester, who flew a tandem flight in some jaw dropping mountains in Pakistan. The cameraman, his passenger, is not a pilot and he was quite a contrast to John’s happy go lucky spirit which did make it a bit comical but I can’t blame the guy for being scared and trepidatious (is that a word?...should be), as they were in this area that had they landed out, it would be unlikely they would get out alive. Near the end of the afternoon’s session of films, the sound of a high powered prop plane buzzed over the tent. Nearly half the crowd immediately got up and left to check it out...yes, I must definitely be at a flying festival. Sadly, the skies were completely socked in so there wasn’t actually anything to check out.

Happy with a "Davelghem" beer:

That evening, many of the group went to bed early buy I hung out with Victor, a paramotor pilot from England who had shown up a few nights earlier. He had learned how to paramotor from Alex and Gans and amazingly when he showed up in the dark in his nice campervan, just by luck he had parked right next to us. He does heating work back in the UK but has his own business so he’s planning on spending the winter skiing in France, living in his campervan...nice. Super nice guy too and we had a good chat and a few drinks into the late hours of the night.

Many wet campers:

The sky finally began to clear in the evening:
