The Boulders of Carnac

October 31st, 2025

I had a chill morning in Octi at my seaside camp spot called Pointe de Kastel Koz near the village of Beuzec-Cap-Sizun thanks to the weather.  It had been windy and stormy all night, and it was just starting to taper off by 11 am.  It gave me a chance to have a nice breakfast and catch up on some blogging (my “job” while I’m Wandergliding).

I hit the road just before noon and headed south towards a small town in Brittany whose claim to fame is a bunch of menhirs, aka large upright stones, that litter the countryside.  There are more than 10,000 of them!

They were erected from 4500 to 2000 BC.  One idea behind the motivation of such an undertaking is that generations erected stones in honour of their ancestors.

Rock on!

I only spent about a half hour checking out the rocks before driving further south to a camping spot in a small town called Saint Viaud, about 45 minutes outside the city of Nantes, where I had planned to visit the following day.  It was located by a small lake with a 1.5-kilometre trail running around it.  There was also a water ski pulley system (there were 6-8 steel leaning towers with a cable running from one to the next) along with various shaped jumps.  Nearby there were several football (soccer) pitches.  It looked like a nice little town with lots of activities to keep people fit.

My camping app stated that there were hot showers.  I found one shower in a small building with other doors for toilets and a sink, all of which were locked, but the shower door was open.  There were some leaves inside by the drain but otherwise it looked clean. I tested it out, but only cold water poured out.  Perhaps hot water was available in the summer when the place was busy…but I decided to grin and bear it and have a cold shower as I was trying to conserve the water in Octi, plus my van’s shower needed some caulking to prevent water flowing into some cracks that it shouldn’t.  Oh, and I needed a full shower…I had just been washing the “essentials” for the last couple of days.  Let’s just say it was…refreshing.

A relatively quiet day with regards to activities, but I had a relaxing morning, still got some miles under my belt and enjoyed the day.
