Wasted in Oaxaca

November 30th, 2014

Belle, Verity and I caught a morning bus out of Mexico City to Oaxaca (pronounced “O-waa-kaa”), which is the name of a state but also the capital city.  It was supposed to be a six hour trip but it turned into more than eight.  Some of the landscape was stunning with the odd conical volcano and we seemed to climb and climb up a mountain pass without really descending again.

A nice volcano on the way:

A bit of a table top mountain:

After finding a hotel we headed out for a drink.  We stumbled upon a small bar with only a few local men imbibing.  Belle decided that we should step up our game and she was keen to have her first taste of Mezcal, a similar drink to Tequila but made from a different agave plant.  Okay, game on.  Well one shot led to another, accompanied with some beers and this continued on into the evening although we did relocate to a restaurant patio in the busy town square which was crammed full with merchants selling all types of trinkets, some tents and food vendors.  We carried on until the wee hours of the morning before it was time to call it a night…but what a fun night it was.

Giddy up ladies!

Evil Mezcal:

Salud!

Okay...let's try again:

Verity decided that she could play better than the Mariachi dude...

The next day we wandered around town and then spent a good portion of the afternoon in a beauty salon as Verity wanted to get her acrylic nails removed.  Belle and I didn’t mind just hanging out, being slightly hung over.  Sadly we all felt pretty much finished with Oaxaca already.  It is a beautiful city with some lovely buildings and a common tourist attraction is to visit some ruins outside of the town but sometimes when traveling you just feel like moving on…

Next stop, San Cristobal de Las Casas.
