Mud Smearing

October 19th, 2011

From being here back in February, Naomi had heard of the mud bathing that could be done near Sweet Water Lake. I’ve only done it once, back in January with Jon from England and it was kinda fun but it really is more like “mud smearing” than “mud bathing” as you have to expend a lot of energy scraping the mud off of the riverbank and then applying it to your skin. The result is a softer skin for sure...but it doesn’t last too long.
Our view in the morning from our balcony:

Who doesn’t like a puppy at breakfast time?

This dog was funny, acting like a bouncer for the place:

We stopped by Chilli’s Guesthouse so Naomi had a little dance with Seona:

From Sweet Water beach, behind the little lagoon/lake there is a path that follows a river up into the forest. The hike is only about 5 minutes to reach one of a couple of spots where the mud is present. The patch we used is not much bigger than the size of an album (if you remember what those are!). The scraping was more work than I recall back in January and I wondered how much more of this mineral mud is left.

The scraping begins:

We smeared the mud over our bodies including our faces and then sat on the rocks to let it dry...getting whiter and whiter with each passing minute. The mud becomes like talcum powder when it’s all dry. Looking like ghosts we walked down to the beach to the lagoon to wash off the mud in the warm water...and now the softness of our skin could rival any baby’s bottom!

Turning into a ghost:

Feeling a bit pale:

Statuesque:

Nice close up:

Now feeling ghouly:

About to leave the river:

Hiking back out to the beach:

At the Sweet Water lake:

The mandatory “socks” shot:

Now half way:

Just the head left:

Naomi’s mandatory socks shot:

Getting deeper...the water is so warm here:

Back at our guesthouse we enjoyed a nice sunset before heading out for a nice dinner at 21 Coconuts.

Naomi surprised by her dinner that evening...not that I can remember what it was:

Mud Smearing: check.
